The suspended screen is a photographic reproduction of a marble wall in Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion (built 1929, demolished 1930, and recreated 1986). The stone’s symmetrical patterns, echoed in the palindrome tile, are reminiscent of the inkblots in a Rorschach psychological test. Behind the screen photo flashes go off every ten seconds. The flashes reveal hidden forms in the marble and etch the shapes onto our retinas, and into our subconscious.
